Shory Photography
I suggest each and every one of my clients read this to cover any base questions and concerns. This also gives lots of ideas, and suggestions that I recommend reading.
Since starting doing photo shoots for people, I have also realized everyone has a mind of their own. My job is to capture your personalities and recreate moments. While I am the photographer, there are a few things you can help me out with.
Outfits and Accessories
My idea of a great photo is one that can capture who and what you are about. Outfits can really be defining of you, but at the same time can really clash a photo. The focus should be on your face, not your outfit. Here’s a few of my suggestions and ideas to create a great picture!
• Can’t decide which outfit you want to wear? Bring a few! Most of my shots are at more than one location. Having those new outfits can really create a diverse look for each photo and bring out your personality. We can just hope there will be somewhere for you to change.
• What is best for my shots? Solid neutral colors are always the best way to go! Prints, patterns and floral distract the viewer and they tend to take a lot of justice from the photo. For girls I recommend a soft pink, white, brown, tan, or grey. Of coarse, if you are wanting to wear any thing different from what I suggested, I will make it work. I ask of you to tell me two-three days before the day of the shoot to tell me your outfits so I can plan accordingly.
• How should I do my makeup? Natural looks best, and I suggest doing your makeup just like you would for school, or work. Don’t go overboard with bright colors. To reduce face shine from oils, because you will be in the sun, I suggest a face powder. A small amount of pink blush will also help make your eyes glow in each shot.
• Should I wear any jewelry? Jewelry is great as long as it is simple. Small diamonds or white pearls always look good. Dangle earrings are good as long as they are silver or gold. Bracelets are okay if you don’t overdo it. Single silver bracelets work. As most girls would know, wearing every piece of jewelry you have never looks good so try and avoid that at all costs. A simple earring and nice necklace works.
• Does it really matter what shoes I wear? Yes! I could not stress this enough! White dirty shoes never show up well in a photo, and I always end up having to over work myself to edit them to look good. It is a major distraction. Simple flats. Flip-flops or tennis shoe are going to be best. For you girls, I know those heels are not fun to walk around in, and I know it isn’t fun sinking into the dirt and grass. Let’s keep it casual and simple.
• Oh great, day of the shoot and I break out in acne! That’s okay! If it is really bad enough that you dread the thought of even looking at your pictures, I can edit blemishes. I don’t mess with scars though. I like to think the scar is a part of you, and I don’t want to change a thing about you!
• Feet, hands, and legs, OH my! I love doing the cute feet shots with the family or single shots. If you have a cute nail decal on fingers or toes, I usually will get a picture of those. For you ladies, don’t forget to keep your toes and fingers glamour up if you are looking for shots like these. Remember to shave your legs if you want these shots as well, because if wearing long pants, I will most likely ask you to roll them up to get the shots the best as possible.
• I want to add props! If you have an idea of what kind of props you are wanting in your pictures, and own a few things you want to bring a long, please do! I usually will bring a lot a few items I think will really look good in the photos. The props I usually supply are umbrellas, flowers, hats, frames, and a few other things. Things I suggest you bring if you want to really show our personality are instruments you play, sport items you play, teddy bear you have always had, and things in that sort. Props are not a must, but are always a fun detail to add in.
Making the best out of your pictures.
• The best way to get great photos is by having a positive and happy attitude. If you're excited and enjoying yourself, it shows up on every shot. Try not to be nervous because it shows more than you might think. Being comfortable is important as well.
• How should I pose? While I will help you choosing posing styles for the shot I am taking, I prefer you do what you want. Natural shots of you being comfortable and not placed are the ones that turn out best. If you want to try something different, don’t hesitate to do so! Not every picture needs to have a big smile, and not every picture needs a mysterious side. These should be showing several aspects of you and your personality! If asked to sit or lean on a wall during a pose, do it naturally as if you are hanging with friends. Try not to feel shy with me. Remember, I do this a lot, with a lot of new people, there is nothing that can go wrong!
Editing pictures.
• After your photo shoot is up, I also offer you some editing as well. I can do just about anything on this. Fix blemishes, pimples, whiten teeth, crop, and so much more. I edit every picture, to adjust lighting and exposure. When I do editing, I don’t like going over board. While the ‘color splash’ is a cool effect, and something I am willing to do, I don’t like using it a lot. Same goes for eye color changes, clothing color changes and hair color changes. I will do so if asked. I edit my pictures according to how I want them to look.
• How do you want me to edit? I also tend to stay away from changing your eye color, and hair color, making your skin tanner, whitening teeth, and blemish remover because I hate to feel like I could be offending you. If you want me to do these things, you can ask and I will do so happily. If I am not asked to do so, most of the time I will avoid doing it at all costs.
• Removing my label. In every single one of my shots I take, I put my label in the photo as well. Shory Photography 2010 is my label. I have this in my pictures for copyright purposes to protect me and my business name. I also have it there for advertising as well. I do not remove this label for anyone. I wish for you to keep it there as well. Usually the label is in small print in the right hand corner where it can easily be hid with a picture frame.
• Edited and non edited photos. I save every single picture I ever do. Edited and unedited. If a person asks me to send them both sets, I will, but do not expect my label to be removed. That label is permanent.
• How do I get my pictures back? After taking your set of photos, I usually ask for a week give or take to finish editing the pictures. After I am finished editing, I can either email you the pictures, or mail you a cd with the pictures on it. I post all my photography on my blog, and my networking sites. If you are part of my networking site, you will notice I will tag you in the photos. If you are not comfortable with the photos being placed on my site, I will happily take them down.
